Abstract

Many Muslims consider Islam not just a system of certain dogmas and rituals rather a complete code of life that leads them to success in this world and the hereafter. Since the success of an individual and society signifcanly relates to the role of state, scholars have identified many socio-economic principles that Islam provides for running state affairs. Considering the needs of the contemporary times, the paper contends that these principles should be seen as the basis for the reconstruction of modern Islamic state. It identifies guiding principles of making a constitution in an Islamic state. It also explores the tradition of making constitutions in Islamic history by examining some constitutions of premodern and modern Muslim states.
