Abstract

Abstract

The linguistic and literary features of the Qur’an have drawn the attention of scholars for centuries. Some of the features of the Qur’anic language that have extensively been studied by the scholars relate to the science of rhetoric (‘ilm al-balaghah). One of the literary features of the Qur’an is the use of oaths. The Qur’anic commentators have provided several explanations for the use of oaths in the Qur’an. Of the several objects by which the Qur’an swears oaths are creatures and divine signs (ayat). This article attempts to study different rhetorical aspects of the Qur’anic oaths by the creatures and divine signs in the light of select exegetical literature.
