Abstract

Shuddhi was one of the premier Hindu movements during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in British India, which focused primarily on reconverting those Hindus who had gone into the fold of other religions. The Arya Samaj, an organization founded by the nineteenth-century Hindu reformer Swami Dayananda Saraswati, primarily spearheaded the movement. This article begins by introducing the concept of Shuddhi. It traces then the historical developments of Shuddhi movement while focusing on its different phases and regional contexts. Lastly, it outlines various aspects of the impact that Shuddhi movement had on Hindu-Muslim relations in the British era.
