Abstract

Mysticism aims at communication between God and man. It is often divided into two kinds: religious mysticism and philosophical mysticism. The former is common in all the religions whether they are Semitic or Non Semitic religions. The later is also ancient which can be traced back to ancient Greece. The Muslim tradition has also these two types of mysticism and it has passed through different ages. Although the practice of mysticism is usually associated with men in Islamic tradition, however, Muslim women are also involved with the Sufi practices from the beginning of Islamic history. This study discusses the activities of women practitioners in Sufi groups in three dimensions. The first one relates to the activities of women concerning practical and academic aspects of mysticism. The second highlights the spiritual guidance taken by women from male practitioners. And finally the third highlights the spiritual guidance taken by men from female practitioners.
