Abstract

There is a general consensus among all the Muslim jurists that Hadith (Prophetic tradition) is a primary source of Islamic law. However, various criteria for determining authenticity of Hadith had been formulated and proposed by early jurists (Fuqaha) and scholars of Hadith (Muhaddithin). In this regards, the founders of Hanafi school of Islamic law had also laid down several criteria for accepting or rejecting any report attributed to Prophet. This paper studies the complete available body of  works attributed to the two most important disciples of Imam Abu Hanifah, i.e.,  Abu Yousuf and Muhammad b. Hasan al-Shaybani. The aim of the study is to determine the status of Hadith as a source of Hanafi legal framework, with particular emphasis on exploring the major principles of Hadith criticism within the formative period of Hanafi school.
