Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sirah is considered one of the most important branches of Islamic studies. The literature on the subject is rapidly expanding in various languages including English, Urdu, Arabic, Turkish, Bangla etc. After evolution of almost fourteen hundred years, sirah-writing has reached its zenith in modern times in terms of quantity and diversity of topics covered under the genre. Universities in Pakistan tremendously contribute to teaching and research on the sirah. They hold specialised lectures, discussions, and conferences on the sirah; publish books and journals in this field, and establish many specialised libraries of sirah studies. Besides journals dedicated to sirah studies, a large number of articles appear in the journals relating to the field of Islamic studies. At a conservative estimate, more than one hundred theses were produced in last two decades at M. A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. levels in sirah studies. In this situation, it becomes inevitable not only to reflect upon the quality of the work produced in the field of the sirah, but also point out the dimensions, which need further attention of the scholars. Against this backdrop, this article attempts to highlight the challenges confronting sirah-writing in modern times.
