Abstract

 Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhalvi (1898-1982) was a prominent Indian Islamic scholar. He was born in a family of ‘ulama’; he was the nephew of Maulana Mu╒ammad Ilyas Kandhalvi, the founder of Tablighi Jama‘at. He got his education from Mazahir al-‘Ulum in Saharanpur, a highly respected seat of Islamic learning in India. He was an eminent scholar of ╒adith. He not only taught hadith to thousands of students, but also left behind him rich literature of commentaries on famous books of hadith. Awjaz al-Masalik is a detailed commentary on Imam Malik’s Muwatta’, consisting of seventeen volumes. The book was well-received, especially by the scholars of hadith. In this book, Kandhalvi employed different methods while introducing narrators of hadiths. This article discusses in detail his diversified style of introducing narrators in Awjaz al-Masalik.
