Abstract

Hadith is the record of the life of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him). The scholars of hadiths took great pains to preserve his sayings and report his actions. Sunan of Abu Dawud is considered one of the six most authentic books of hadiths. Imam Abu Dawud devoted most of his life to the compilation of this book. He formulated rules for acquisition and dissemination of hadith, a process known as al-akhdh wa ’l-tahdith in the field of hadith sciences.  These rules are found in an epistle−later known as Risalah ila Ahl Makkah fi Wa╖f Sunanih−that he had written to the people of Makkah. While taking into account the rules Imam Abu Dawud formulated for acquisition and dissemination of hadith, the present paper discusses various aspects of the methodology that he adopted and applied while compiling the Sunan.
