Abstract

Exegetical improvement (istidrak) is an important dimension in the tafsiri literature. Istidrak, in this context, is a process in which an interpreter of the Qur’an attempts to rectify, emend, or supplement the opinion of another interpreter if the former disagrees with the latter on some exegetical viewpoint. This article studies the exegetical improvements (istidrakat) of Shihab al-Din Ma╒mud al-Alusi in Ru╒ al-Ma‘ani and Ghulam Rasul Sa‘idi in Tibyan al-Qur’an on Fakhr al-Din al-Razi’s al-Tafsir al-Kabir. The article demonstrates with examples that, in their exegeses of the Qur’an, Shihab al-Din al-Alusi and Ghulam Rasul Sa‘idi disagreed, at various places, with Fakhr al-Din al-Razi on his exegetical viewpoints.
