Abstract

ABSTRACT Nazzarat al-Ma‘arif al-Qur’aniyyah was an educational institute that was established in Delhi on June 13, 1913 with an aim to promulgate Shah Wali Allah’s Qur’anic thought. Maulana Ma╒mud ╓asan, Shaikh al-Hind, founded the institute and appointed Maulana ‘Ubaid Allah Sindhi as its Director General. Drawing inspiration from Shah Wali Allah’s principles of tafsir, Maulana Sindhi elaborated basic principles for the study of the Qur’an in accordance with the needs of the modern era. His understanding of the Qur’an is discernable in four tafasir, which are basically compilations of notes taken by his students during his lectures. These are: Ilham al-Ra╒man in Arabic language, Ilqa’ al-Mannan in Sindhi language, and al-Maqam al-Ma╒mud and Qur’ani Shu‘ur-i Inqilab in Urdu language. This article introduces in detail the contribution of Maulana Sindhi to Qur’anic Studies.
