Abstract

Interest (riba) is an ancient socio-economic ill which has deprived humans of economic justice and prosperity generations after generations. It had been condemned and declared unlawful (haram) not
only in the revelation sent down upon the last Messenger and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be on him) in the form of the Qur'an and Sunnah but also in the revelations send to the earlier prophets (Peace be on them). Muslims living in the non-Muslim countries face a situation where they become prone or compelled to interest based financial transactions in various matters of life ranging from interest on welfare trust funds to house-financing. Given to their special circumstances Jurists of subcontinent have taken diverse positions on the permissibility of such transactions. This article attempts to look into the issue and present an evaluation of the arguments presented by these jurists to support their positions.
