Abstract

Science of the (biographies and grading of the) Narrators of Hadith ('Ilm al-Rijal) is one of the crucial branches of the Science of Hadith Criticism ('Ilm Naqd al-Hadith). The Muhaddithun (Scholars of Hadith) have established a very strict criterian for the grading of narrators of Hadiths with respect to the level of trustworthiness ('adalah) of each narrator (rawi) determining the acceptability of his/her narration. This unique science developed by the Muslim Scholars of Hadith to establish the authenticity (Sihhah) of the traditions is non existent with the other faith communities. Though the Muhaddithun usually express the trustworthiness (ta'dil) or non-trustworthiness ('jarh) of the narrators using explicit words at times they express it by using body language or movements of various body organs. This paper studies this phenomenon by digging into the voluminous corpus of the works writtenby the experts of 'Ilm al-Rijal and collects it under four major categories. This article further attempts to explain the meanings expressed by these various movements of different body organs used by the Muhaddithun to express the trustworthiness (ta'dil) or non-trustworthiness ('jarh) of the narrators.
