Abstract

The Qur'an was revealed upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) in the form of recitation of the divinely coposed words (kalimat), verses (ayat) and chapters (surahs). Though the Qur'an was revealed in bits and pieces it was arranged by the Prophet (peace be on him) in accordence with the divine instructions. The Qur'an's thus being a divinly composed diction charactrises it with perfect fluency, superb clarity and soundness. Its Text enjoys firm coherence and perfect harmony. The sequence of the text of its chapters (surahs), verses (ayat) and their parts all are mutually interlinked intricately. The Scholars have also shown intricate links and connections amongst the verses (ayat) of a chapter (surah) and its main theme and purposes. This paper explores the history and developments in the studies conducted with reference to the coherence of the text of the Qur'an from the second century to modern times. The article espicially explores the principles which Allamah Zamahshari applied in his study of the Qur'an evolving new dimensions, as well as the contribution of Imam Fakhruddin Razi in this regard. Al-Razi, in his tafsir, has miticulously commented upon coherence in each and every verse (ayah) and its parts as well as each and every chapter of the Qur'an. The paper also examins Burhan al-Din Baqai's work and Shah Wali Allah's views (surah) in this regard۔
