Abstract

Islamic Culture attached great importance to the idea of beauty and aesthetic taste which is particularly reflected in the art of calligraphy. Some superb specimens of beautiful penmanship can be seen in the inscriptions that decorate Islamic architecture. This article seeks to discuss the development of Islamic architectural calligraphy in Sultanate Bengal, a hinterland in the old world of Islam, in the context of its cultural history. Most of the early Islamic monuments in the region had some kind of calligraphic writings on them since Islamic culture considered inscriptions a powerful medium to convey visual, cultural, and spiritual messages to the people. These inscriptions were rendered in various styles such as Kufi, Thulth, Naskh, Riqa, Rayhani, Muhaqqaq, Tughra’ and Bihari. The article also discusses some untapped inscriptions discovered recently by the author during his archaeological field work in Bengal.
