Abstract

In the Hadith sciences, the term Dirayat indicates the methodology of textual criticism that has been applied by the various jurists in their legal debates. Amongest the earliest jurists who frequently applied this methodology on discussing the Hadith was Abu Hanifa. He did this by relying upon some sayings of Hazrat Umar and Hazrat Aesha as indicated by Abu Yousuf, one of the famous disciples of Abu Hanifa. This study attempts to explore the major principles of the Hanafie's methodology of textual criticism (Dirayat) focussing on the works of Abu Yousuf. Moreover these principles that are four in numbers have been examined with historical perspective.
