Abstract

The classical Sirah literature is an amalgam of both authentic and inauthentic reports, as described by Hadith scholars. The logic behind compilation of these narratives was to avoid the loss of any minor information if available about the life of Holy Prophet ﷺ  . Despite its significance this approach also has some disadvantages. Inauthentic reports have been a constant source to defame and criticize Islam and the personality of the last Prophet ﷺ. This aspect of Sirah writing has generated a new debate about classical sources and their critical evaluation was considered indispensable by Muslim scholars. This produced a good deal of literature about old collections of traditions and narratives. In this article the author has made an attempt to analyze and evaluate some of these works.
