Abstract

Political issues were dominant among the debates of Muslim intellectual circles of Indian Subcontinent. The central theme of these debates were the adoption of a comprehensive and balanced strategy that effectively safe ground Muslim identity as well as enable the Muslim community to positively engage with colonial power on the one hand and with the Hindu majority of the land on the other. The article reads and analysis an unexplored letter of Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) as eminent Muslim thinker, addressed to Syed Hashimi Faridabadi (1890-1964), a literary figure of the twentieth century. The contents of the letter are very rich and provide Iqbal's reflections on some very significant matters pertaining to the political role of Muslim community in India during 1928-1932, especially his vision of a future Muslim state comprising the north-western areas of the United India.
