Abstract

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan is a religious scholar from the 20th century who, after initially coming into consciousness under the intellectual influence of Maulana Maududi, eventually chose a different path from him. He remained a critic of Maulana Maududi's thoughts from that time until his death. During this period, Maulana Khan also compiled a considerable amount of religious literature. After parting ways with Maulana Maududi, Khan joined the "Tablighi Jamaat" for a while before separating from them too. He then spent a short time with Maulana Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi and soon withdrew from there as well. Afterwards, he devoted the rest of his life to serving the religion on an individual basis. However, while serving the religion, Maulana Khan drew a line over almost all contemporary scholars and leaders of various schools of thought, except for a few, essentially declaring himself as the authority. It wouldn't be wrong to say that except for Ghulam Ahmed Perwez, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, and Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, he subjected all other contemporaries to criticism and ridicule. this study reviews the critical arrows Maulana Khan has shot at contemporary and some past scholars in paving the way for his interpretation of religion. The critique in this study is focused on thoughts rather than individuals.
