Abstract

Islam is a multitude of five things: theological ideas, rituals of worship, ethical values for social relations, laws of Shariah, and spiritual ethics. Islamic theology developed by the day Islam came to existence. But with the arrival of Greek philosophy and its great acceptance in Islamic intellectual society during Mamun ur Rashid era, Islamic theology got complicated. Gumrah sects like mu’tazilah emerged. They began to use reason beyond its limits, and so they fell into grave mistakes. Then great Islamic intellectuals [mutakallimeen] came to cancel the wrong ideas. They explained the nature of reason and divine revelations. They also described the limits of human reason. Among these intellectuals were some who relied mostly on holy scripts of Islam, muhaditheen. On the other hand, some intellectuals like Ghazali and Razi relied mostly on rational evidence. Some were called maturidi and the other ash’ari. In my article I have compared the ideas of two great Muslim theologist Aamidi and Nasafi. Saifud din aamidi 551-631 AD was a great Muslim theologist from the Ash’ari school of thought. Abul Barakat Nasafi was a prominent theologist from Maturidi school of thought. By comparing the thoughts and approach of these two men, we can shed light on distinct features of ash’ari and maturidi schools.
