Abstract

In this article an effort has been made to describe the services of Umm al-Mu’minin Hadrat Umm-i Salmah  (R.A). Hadrat Umm-i Salmah is among the great personalities of Islam. She was the daughter of Abu Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi and ‘Atikah bint  ‘Amir. Being a great scholar and interpreter of Islam, she was among few persons in ‘Arab who knew reading and writing. She had the opportunity to accompany the Holy Prophet (SAWS) on his journeys. She was with him at the battle of Khaybar, siege of Mecca, Ta’if and Hunayn. Umm-i Salmah narrated 387 hadith , out of which 29 are agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim. She was an ardent and zealous student of Islamic jurisprudence. She has not only described hadith and reported her observations of events, but interpreted them for derivation of religious injunctions. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas used to consult her and she provided guidance to even the greatest of the Companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H). She was ever ready to guide the common people in religious matters.

As a teacher she had a clear and persuasive manner of speech. Umm-i Salmah is a role model for women. She taught Islam many people. She was an authority on many matters of Islamic Law, especially those concerning women. Her life shows to what height a Muslim women can rise.
