Impact of Waqf-e-Tajāzub/ Ta‘ānuq on Urdu Translation of Holy Qur’ān: An analytical study of selective Urdu Translations
Abstract
After the compilation of Muṣḥaf-e-Usmanī the punctuation marks were inserted in Qur’ānic text for the convenience of non-native speakers in terms of understanding the meaning easily. Among these marks, there is a mark known as Tajāzub/ Ta’ānuq (combind optional pause). This mark generally occurs twice in an āyah, and it means to have a full stop while reading this āyah on one place and link the āyah with the following word/verse on another place. This action influences the meaning and interpretation of that āyah as the meaning can be changed in both cases while translating the āyah from Arabic into any other language. It happens Because of an interpreter has a vast place to elaborate the meaning of the Holy Qur’ān, but the translator converts only the meaning of the Arabic text comprehensively in other language without interpretation. Thus, it seems necessary to find out the impact of this mark on the meaning of the Holy Qur’ān. This Study intends to find out the impact of this mark on the meaning of holy Qur’ān and it will also try to determine the causes of preferences given by Urdu translators of Holy Qur’ān. Therefore, in this context this article will also explore the translator uses the full-stop in the verse and that part of the verse is being linked with the following word/verse and how it impacts the meaning of that verse.
