Abstract

Mawlana Shibli Nu‘mani was an intellectual legend of Indian subcontinent whose writings stand out as literary classics by any standard. He was an eminent historian, a notable researcher and a celebrated writer. He pioneered the introduction of modern Arabic language and literature in the subcontinent in order to bring Muslims closer to their religious academic heritage. In 1893, he established the first Arabic society in India named lajnatu al-adab in Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College. He also penned some profound works in Arabic language which enjoy a pivotal reputation in Arabic literary tradition of the subcontinent. This article aims to make a comprehensive survey of Mawlana Shibli's efforts in the propagation of Aabic language and literature in the Indian subcontinent.
