Abstract
Qala Abu Dawud being one of the difficult and challenging areas of Sunan Abu Dawud, has remained the center of attention for all the commentators of Sunan Abu Dawud. Mawlana Khalil A╒mad Saharanpuri (in his fourteen volume Arabic commentary of Sunan Abu Dawud titled Badl Al-majhud) has elucidated this part distinctively. This paper reviews his research on the subject. Our study reveals that Mawlana Saharanpuri presents the reader with complete chains of Hadith transmission where ever these are condensed in the original text. On some occasions, the learned commentator differs with the compiler on the account of authenticity of the narrators and provides the most accurate information in this respect. Wherever necessary, he displays his discontent on Imam Abu Dawud’s research and observations and explicates the inaccuracies of the compiler. The literary style of the commentary is quite comprehensive and explains the challenging textual components well. However, the referred work has some flaws also; for example there are some complains about the unavailability of some traditions that can be traced in the various Ahadith books. Despite being a Hanafi Usuli, writer ignores many available books of Hanafi Usuliyyin while explaining the terminology of Hadith sciences.
