Abstract

Rajm (stoning) is one of the severest punishments sanctioned not only in Islamic law (sharīʻah) but also in some other pre-Islamic codes (shar‘ man qablanā). Yet the conditions for the implementation of the punishment and scope of committing the crime, notwithstanding the conjecture in the proof of punishment, are the issues that need to be analyzed. While focusing on the debates surrounding the terms such as udūd and uqūq Allāh, this study presents and analyses the views of some Muslim scholars who have debated different aspects of the penalty of rajm in the context and conditions of modern times.
