Abstract

In the present time, a major misperception about ijtihād arises because of its definitions. At least three different theories are prevalent in academic circles of our society regarding ijtihād. First, ijtihād is said to be addition and supplementation to the Qur’ān and sunnah. Second, ijtihād is said to be modification and abrogation of the injunctions of the Qur’ān and sunnah. Third, ijtihād is said to be a quest for the deduction of sharī‘ah rulings from the Qur’ān and sunnah. The narratives of the modernists tend towards the first and second standpoints. However, the traditionalists regard the third standpoint as valid. In this context, the present study examines the viewpoints of both the traditionalists and modernists regarding the concept of ijtihād in our times.
