The Meaning and Application of ‘Ilm al-I‘tibār in the Light of Verses on Domestic Management: A Comparative Study of Ilhām al-Raḥmān and Bayān al-Qur’ān
Abstract
The Qur’ān is considered an abiding code of life by majority of Muslims. However, the principles of its interpretation have always been the subject of critical discussion among scholars. This explains why we see multiple interpretations of a single verse by different commentators. Two of these personalities from twentieth century, Maulānā ‘Ubaid Allāh Sindhī and Maulānā Ashraf ‘Alī Thānvī, have also interpreted the Qur’ān in the light of their own exegetical principles. One clear disagreement between them stems from interpreting the Qur’ān using the principle of ‘Ilm al-I‘tibār. Whereas Maulānā Thānvī uses this principle to address problems related to individual moral purification and enhancement, Maulānā Sindhī employs it to deduce solutions to problems related to affairs of a state. This article aims to present a comparative analysis of how the two scholars use ‘Ilm al-I‘tibār to deduce implications from the Qur’ānic verses for domestic matters.
