A Comparative Study of the Viewpoints of the Jurists and Commentators of the Qur’ān Regarding Muḥkam and Mutashābih
Abstract
Interpretation of legal texts is a technical task, particularly when the texts of the Holy Qur’ān and Prophetic traditions are involved. Therefore, Muslim jurists have devised principles of interpretation of the text which deal with different aspects of a word and sentence and their context. Since the commentators of the Qur’ān also interpret its text, there are some terminologies that are common to the Qur’ān commentators and the jurists. Two such terminologies are Muḥkam and Mutashābih. This article attempts to elaborate the use of these terminologies by the commentators of the Qur’ān and the jurists by highlighting the commonalities and differences in their understanding of the terms.
