Abstract

Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr is regarded very highly among exegesis of the Holy Qur’ān in the Muslim world. Ibn Kathīr, the exegete, has quoted many aḥādīth in an attempt to explain verses of the Holy Qur’ān. As pointed out by Ibn Kathīr himself, some of these aḥādīth have issues of authenticity. He has used a particular methodology for rejecting a ḥadīth which may apparently seem authentic due to its sound chain of narrators. This methodology in which reason and common sense is used to evaluate the authenticity of a ḥadīth is often called ‘Ilm al-Dirāyah in the sciences of ḥadīth. In this article, an attempt has been made to set out the dirāyah principles, using which Ibn Kathīr calls a ḥadīth unauthentic, which otherwise might be narrated by strong chain of narrators.
