Abstract

This article revisits the contributions of Imam Shah Waliullah al-Dihlawi (1703-1762) to the field of Ḥadīth and its sciences, positioning him as a key figure in Indian Islamic scholarship. Recognising his broader efforts to revitalise multiple religious disciplines through teaching, writing, and compilation, the research focuses on his distinct role in reviving and enriching hadith studies. By analyzing al-Dihlawi's interactions with contemporaries and his prolific output in Ḥadīth-related works, the study sheds light on how he contributed to Islamic jurisprudence and other Islamic sciences. Furthermore, the research delves into the innovative and inclusive aspects of al-Dihlawi's approach, highlighting his meticulous methodology and creative engagement with Ḥadīth. It highlights his strong grounding in Ḥadīth sciences and his unwavering commitment to preserving and propagating the Prophet's (peace be upon him) Sunnah. Ultimately, this analysis contributes to a nuanced understanding of al-Dihlawi's legacy as a reformer and revitalizer of Ḥadīth scholarship within the broader context of Islamic intellectual history of the Indian subcontinent.
