The Signification of Tafarrud (Singularity of Narrators) A Case Study of Chapter Bā’ of al-Jarḥ wa al-Ta‘dīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim
Abstract
This research examines the signification of the singularity of narrators (ifrād) for twenty-two Ḥadīth narrators mentioned in al-Jarḥ wa ’l-Ta‘dīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. Before Ibn Abī Ḥātim, Muḥammad b. Ismā‘īl al-Bukhārī also used a word or text that signifies only one grade of disapproval or approval for the same narrators and combined them in one chapter. One should not claim that the strangeness of their names is the only reason for this. By looking at the biographies of these narrators, it becomes clear that there are also reasons that relate to the narrator in terms of ignorance. Moreover, some aspects do not relate to the narrations but relate to the characteristics of the narrators, such as the uniqueness of the nickname like Abū Hind al-Dārī. In this article, an attempt has been made to find out the reasons for using a word or text that signifies the ifrād of specific narrators mentioned in al-Jarḥ wa ’l-Ta‘dīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim.
