Yazidi Scriptures: A Critical Study
Abstract
This study examines Yazidism a monotheist religion found in some Muslim countries. The adherents of this religion are called Yazidis or Izidis. Some scholars opine that this denomination belongs to Islam but some others including some the Yazīdīs dispute this. This paper studies and critically analyzes the scriptures of the Yazidis. Yazidis believe in two books: al-Jalwah and Mushaf Rash. They believe that these books are lost because of the persecution of their community in the past. However, as they say, the content of these two sacred books was preserved by heart by their religious leaders. Therefore, it is important to critically assess the authenticity and historicity of these books in the light of historical sources and information received from the adherents of this religion. The results of this study show that neither the source of these books nor their writing date is known.
It is a condition of publication in this journal that authors assign copyright or license publication rights of their articles to the Islamic Research Institute, International Islamic University,Islamabad. This enables IRI to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Furthermore, the authors are required to secure permission if they want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source).
