The Method of Reasoning of Imam Abu Ḥanifah al-Numan

This article aims to elaborate the method of legal reasoning of Imam Abu Hanifah al-Numan (d. 150/767) and his methodology to discover solutions to the socio-legal problems and challenges faced by the emerging Muslim society of his time. The primary sources from which he derived Islamic laws are the Quran, Prophetic traditions, consensus of Muslim scholars, and analogical reasoning. It is known that Abu Hanifah himself did not compile principles and methods of his legal reasoning. Rather his disciples and followers especially Abu Yusuf Yaqub b. Ibrahīm (d. 182/798) and Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Shaybani (d. 189/805) compiled and developed his principles of legal reasoning. Many later scholars of Hanafi school of Islamic law also contributed to this.
