Manuscript of Ilham al-Rahman by Maulana Ubaid Allah Sindhi: A Methodological and Textual Study
Abstract
The article aims to study the methodological and textual aspects of the manuscript of a well-known Quranic commentary titled Ilham al-Rahman by Maulana Ubaid Allah Sindhi (d. 1944). Muslims produced a huge scholarly heritage through the ages. Unfortunately, most of this heritage has never seen the light of day and is preserved in the form of numerous manuscripts in libraries all over the world. However, with advancement of printing technology, many manuscripts of Muslim scholarship have been edited and published. Scholars and students of Islamic sciences have done pains taking research on numerous manuscripts. One of such manuscripts is Ilham al-Rahman. It is a very important work of Maulana Sindhi in the field of interpretation and hermeneutics of the Quran. The author was not only a scholar of Islamic sciences but also had deep insights into human history and contemporary society. He maximized utilization of his profound knowledge of human history and society in his reflections on the Quranic text.
