إن السيرة النبوية من أقوى الوسائل التربوية تأثيراً في سلوك المسلم بعد كتاب الله تبارك وتعالى، وقد كان للشعر العربي دوره في توثيق أحداث السيرة النبوية. والشعر بما أحاط به من توثيق وتدقيق وتحقيق من خلال الرواية الشفهية يعد وثيقة تاريخية مهمّة في بيان بعض أحداث السيرة النبوية الشريفة.
في الشعر العربي أحداث وتفاصيل للسيرة النبوية ربما لا نجدها في كثير من الكتب، ولقد واكب الشعر مختلف حياة سيدنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم واهتم المحدثون والمؤرخون بهذه الروايات، وحكموا على هذا الشعر من الناحية الحديثية.
ولكن. . . ما درجة ما ورد في الشعر العربي من أحداث السيرة من حيث الصحة؟ يجيب عن ذلك أحد رجالات الحديث النبوي الشريف وحفاظه، وهو الحاكم، صاحب المستدرك. حينما أورد مدح سيدنا العباس لسيدنا رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم-.
