The Interpretation of "Wa-Ḍribūhunna" in Tafsīr Literature: A Comparative Study

This article presents a comparative analysis of the Quranic phrase " Wa-Ḍribūhunna" in various Quranic commentaries. Emphasising the significance of family relations, particularly as outlined in Sūrah al Nisā’. the article explores the implication of the verse on guardianship, which is central to establishing a family structure that ensures the rights of all family members. The study critically examines the interpretations of sixty classical and contemporary commentators regarding the issue of wife-beating, highlighting their diverse approaches and perspectives. Through this comparative analysis, the article aims to elucidate the Qur'anic vision for managing familial disputes and crises, suggesting that the disciplinary action mentioned in the verse follows a hierarchical order. The analysis argues that mild and non-harsh physical reprimand, as opposed to divorce, is preferable as a last resort for preserving the family unit. The article also emphasizes that such measures should be reconsidered if they are unlikely to achieve the intended disciplinary purpose, given the varied circumstances of women. The study concludes by advocating for a wise and context-sensitive approach to interpreting and applying this verse in contemporary family life.
