الملخص

ibn taīmīaẗ (d.: 728 AH) established an integrated theory about the divine attributes under the title: “Proving the attributes God has established for Himself.” The research problem treated in this study relates to the possible foundations of that statement.  The study attempts to clarify this critical point and its relevant dogmatic matters.  To achieve its purpose, the study employs different methodologies including the descriptive and the analytically critical methodology. The study concludes that ibn taīmīaẗ has founded his statement on a weak statement attributable to Malik bin Ansa: "While Istria’ is known, it is unknown how”. The study also concludes that ibn taīmīaẗ used this statement as the basis to distinguish between what is Sunni (acceptable to the Shariah) and what is Bid’i (heretical) in this context and that such a stand renders what is mutashābih (equivocal) muḥkam (unequivocal) such that God may occupy a physical space and that He has hands. The study attempts to prove that ibn taīmīaẗ has gone to the extreme in his understanding not considering the Texts’ contexts. Finally, the study recommends conducting further research on the historical context that had probably led to the adoption of such an understanding or such statement.
