الملخص

This study explains the significance of Prophetic traditions for other Islamic sciences. It chooses al-Khaṭīb al-Sharbīnī (d. 1570/977)’s Qur’ānic commentary al-Sirāj al-Munīr as a model to assess his interpretations based on his inferences from the Prophetic traditions. The article argues that al-Khaṭīb al-Sharbīnī had a profound knowledge of the primary sources of Prophetic traditions, especially the six canonical books because he quoted numerous authentic Propetic traditions especially those recorded in the two most authentic books of the Prophetic traditions i.e., Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ of Muslim. He also critically examined many of the weak and fabricated Prophetic traditions, which were cited by other exegetes such as al-Baghawī and al-Zamakhsharī in Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl and al-Kashshāf respectively. This contributed to the exegetic value of al-Khaṭīb al-Sharbīnī’s exegesis al-Sirāj al-Munīr. In addition to this, his exegesis contains discussions and explanations of the difficult words of Prophetic traditions. The article adopted inductive and historical approaches.
