This article examines two foundational methodological challenges that have historically shaped, and in many respects distorted, the study and documentation of the Prophetic Biography (Sīrah). The first concerns the disproportionate emphasis placed on military campaigns (al-Maghāzī) within the dominant historiographical narrative—an imbalance that has resulted in the marginalization of the Prophet’s intellectual, cultural, civilizational, developmental, and ethical contributions. Despite continued scholarly efforts toward comprehensive documentation, this reductionist focus persists, thereby obscuring the breadth and multidimensionality of the Prophetic mission. The second methodological problem lies in the persistent inclination to conflate the Prophet’s circumstantial and context-specific actions—those undertaken to address immediate social, economic, and political contingencies—with timeless religious injunctions possessing universal normative force. Such conflation has led to the elevation of historically contingent policies and administrative measures to the level of permanent legal prescriptions, often without due attention to context, purpose, or function. To address these methodological deficiencies, the article proposes a restructured framework grounded in the imperative of functional differentiation within the Sīrah. It calls for a systematic distinction between the Prophet’s actions undertaken in his divinely mandated role of conveying, explicating, and legislating the religion—which constitute binding Sunnah and command normative adherence—and those motivated by his human, administrative, and procedural functions in managing the temporal affairs of the nascent community. The latter, which constitute the majority of recorded events in the Sīrah, should be interpreted primarily as historically specific human decisions rather than as perpetual religious legislation. The article further advocates a broadening of the scope of Sīrah documentation beyond martial engagements to encompass the Prophet’s comprehensive nation-building policies: the establishment of internal and external security, the organization of markets and commercial activity, the regulation of agriculture and environmental stewardship, the institutionalization of social solidarity, and the management of intercommunal relations and intra-Muslim diversity. Such an expanded methodological horizon would facilitate a more accurate and holistic reconstruction of the Prophetic model—one that foregrounds its overarching values of peace, development, coexistence, and civilizational upliftment.

saad u din al uthmani

This study applies a semiotic–rhetorical framework grounded in A. J. Greimas and Jacques Fontanille’s Semiotics of Passions to examine the transformative power of affective language in the discourse of Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH). It investigates how the Prophet strategically employed affect-laden rhetoric to effect deep cognitive and behavioral transformation among diverse social groups, ultimately unifying them into an ethically grounded and emotionally coherent Ummah. The research posits that Prophetic discourse functions as a highly sophisticated persuasive model rooted in an acute understanding of human nature and its passions (ahwāʾ). Using a descriptive–analytical method, the study analyzes selected ḥadīth texts, focusing on the pathēmic sense-effects they generate—effects central to persuasion and moral formation. The findings reveal that the Prophetic discourse orchestrates affect across three interrelated axes aligned with the higher objectives (maqāṣid) of Islamic law. Through the axis of attraction, the discourse mobilizes hope (rajāʾ) and optimism by invoking future reward and using vivid imagery that stabilizes the emotions of early believers. Through the axis of rejection, it employs warnings and expressions of awe (rahbah) to provoke introspection, repentance, and ethical vigilance, often through striking semantic contrasts between worldly heedlessness and the gravity of the unseen (ghayb). Through the axis of balance, it cultivates compassion (raḥmah) and social solidarity via evocative narratives, potent rhetorical figures, and reminders of divine reciprocity. The study also highlights the semiotics of yearning (shawq), demonstrating how the Prophet’s affective distinction between “Companions” (aṣḥāb) and “Brethren” (ikhwān) generates an enduring emotional horizon that extends his rhetorical influence across time and space.
Nadia Laqja Jalol Saih

This study investigates the contemporary relevance of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during the Medinan period as a solution to modern global crises. The study posits that modern civilization, built on material foundations, conflict-oriented values, self-interest, and racism, has led to a profound moral and spiritual crisis, fracturing communication bridges and fueling wars between Eastern and Western peoples. It suggests that the Prophetic biography (Sirah) in Medina offers a "comprehensive framework for accommodation" and a practical model for managing differences and achieving world peace. The key mechanisms of Prophetic accommodation examined are: the construction of the Mosque (Masjid) as a spiritual and civilizational beacon that dissolves social distinctions and establishes equality and unity; the Charter of Brotherhood (Mu'akhat) between the Emigrants (Muhajirun) and the Helpers (Ansar), which embodied a unique concept of human solidarity, altruism, and rejected individualism and selfishness; and the Constitution of Medina, which founded a modern civil state by elevating the bond of one nation (Ummah Waahidah) above ethnic and sectarian ties, and established the recourse to God and His Messenger (Shari'ah) as the ultimate reference point for resolving disputes.
Koul Mamar

This study explores the extensive contributions of Bengali scholars to the preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of the Prophetic Biography (Sirah), highlighting Bengali as one of the most influential languages for Islamic scholarship in the Indian subcontinent. Spoken by more than four hundred million people, the majority of whom are Muslims, Bengali has long served as a primary medium through which Islamic teachings—including the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—have been studied, transmitted, and understood. The roots of Sirah literature in Bengali can be traced to early oral traditions that later evolved into the distinctive genre of Bengali epic poetry (Malhamah) during the Middle Ages, where Arabic, Persian, and Urdu vocabulary was interwoven into local literary expression. From the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, these works predominantly depicted heroic narratives, battles, and the moral virtues of the Prophet. A significant transformation occurred in the nineteenth century with the emergence of prose Sirah writing in Bengali. This period saw early contributions from non-Muslim authors as well as the first comprehensive Sirah by a Muslim scholar, Sheikh Abdur Rahim (1887), whose work achieved widespread influence. The twentieth century marked an era of unprecedented growth, with a substantial rise in both original compositions and translations of foundational texts from Arabic, Urdu, and Persian. This prolific activity resulted in more than a thousand Bengali publications dedicated to the Sirah, positioning Bengali as the second most productive language—after Arabic—in the global field of Sirah studies.
Muhammad Najm Ul Haq Al Nadawi

This study explores the profound role of Arabic poetry in documenting the Prophetic Biography (al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah) and highlights how poetic expression functioned not only as a medium of praise but also as a reliable historical source. Through examining a wide range of poetic texts—from the early Islamic era to later literary traditions—the research demonstrates that many details of the Prophet Muhammad’s life, battles, virtues, and spiritual qualities have been preserved in verse with a precision that often surpasses prose historical records. The article investigates how poets such as Ḥassān ibn Thābit, Kaʿb ibn Zuhayr, Ibn Rawāḥah, and others provided eyewitness-style narration of major events, and how later poets like al-Būṣīrī, al-Nabahānī, Aḥmad Shawqī, and Aḥmad Muḥarram transformed the sīrah into grand literary epics, especially through the bardāh tradition and extended narrative poems. The research also highlights lost or lesser-known poetic works—most notably the seven-thousand-verse epic by ʿUthmān ibn ʿAlī al-ʿUmrī—as evidence of the richness and continuity of this literary heritage. By analyzing these texts, the study affirms that Arabic poetry serves as an essential archive for preserving historical memory, spiritual sentiment, and cultural identity connected with the life of the Prophet, and argues for the need to revive and critically edit such works to deepen contemporary understanding of the sīrah and its literary representations.
syed riffat

This study examines the concept of isti‘ānah (seeking divine assistance) as reflected in the Sirah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The research begins by defining isti‘ānah linguistically and in Islamic legal terminology, establishing its foundational significance in Islamic thought. It then proceeds through two main sections. The first section explores scriptural and historical evidence demonstrating the exalted status of reliance upon Allah in the Prophetic model, drawing upon the Qur’an, Sunnah, and statements of the early generations to highlight its centrality in the life of faith. The second section presents an analytical study of the manifestations of isti‘ānah in the Sirah, focusing specifically on its highest and most comprehensive form: supplication (du‘ā’). As the essence and core of worship, du‘ā’ embodies humility, submissiveness, and complete dependence upon Allah—traits repeatedly praised in the prophetic narratives and exemplified by the prophets. The study concludes by presenting the key findings, followed by practical recommendations that underscore the enduring relevance of isti‘ānah in contemporary spiritual and ethical life.
Abdul Kareem Esa Al-Ruhaili
