Imām al-Shāfiʿī has been criticized by scholars from his own era to the present. Key areas of criticism include his proficiency in Ḥadīth, his rank among the Muḥaddithīn, and the reception of his narrations within Ḥadīth studies. Although these critiques have been revisited in contemporary scholarship, their origins can be traced to the early period of Islamic scholarship. Notably, the initial criticisms arose during his lifetime and intensified in subsequent generations. However, these critiques have not remained unchallenged. Eminent scholars such as al-Bayhaqī and al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī have addressed these issues through dedicated works that continue to serve as essential references. Among the primary objections are Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn's critical remarks concerning al-Shāfiʿī and the absence of his narrations in the Ṣaḥīḥayn of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. This research seeks to examine these critiques in detail and contextualize the methodological choices of the Ḥadīth scholars within their historical and intellectual frameworks, thereby offering a reasoned defence of al-Shāfiʿī’s
position in the Ḥadīth tradition.
