Strategies of linguistic discourse in the Hadith a pragmatic linguistic approach: The book " One Hundred Selected Hadiths of the Messenger"
Abstract
This research aims to elucidate the primary discourse strategies utilized in the Hadiths of the Noble Prophet by examining the key linguistic mechanisms employed and their influence on interpreting the intentions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The study demonstrates how these mechanisms enable the Hadiths to convey pragmatic meanings that significantly shape the thoughts, educate, and guide the recipients. An exemplar of this analysis is the book "The One Hundred Selected Hadiths of the Messenger", where the Hadiths have been carefully selected and translated, illustrating the applicative breadth of the Prophet’s teachings across linguistic boundaries. Given that the Hadiths of the Noble Prophet represent a legislative linguistic treasure, characterized by structural dominants that align with its discourse strategies, this study employs contemporary linguistic methodologies, notably pragmatics and the descriptive statistical approach, to address its research questions. Pragmatics is particularly relevant as it examines language use as an active tool for impacting the recipient, emphasizing the functional capacity of linguistic statements at the levels of discourse, communication, and societal interaction. The application of the descriptive statistical method enables the delineation of the specific linguistic mechanisms within the Hadiths' linguistic structure. This facilitates the correlation of external formal relationships of the Hadith with its core internal semantics, an essential aspect considering the Hadith's role as a universal communicative act meant to resonate across diverse populations with varying thoughts, beliefs, and contexts. The study concluded that the Noble Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, adeptly utilized four discourse strategies through various linguistic mechanisms. A statistical interpretation provided in the results illustrates how these strategies contribute to the propagation of his divine guidance, which remains applicable to human societal development irrespective of time, place, or individual.
