Abstract

The study critically examines the intricate relationship between citizens’ rights and duties, a fundamental dynamic shaping contemporary societies. It addresses the debate concerning the prioritisation of rights over duties by focusing on a specific case study: the right to work. The study begins by establishing the religious and ethical significance of work within Islam, drawing extensively from the Holy Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the practices of early generations. It then critically analyses whether work is conceptualised as primarily a right, a duty, or both within Islamic thought, and investigates how this understanding influences the
mindset, motivation, and sense of purpose among employees. The research concludes by assessing the implications of upholding the duty to work, particularly within Arab and Islamic societies, considering both domestic and international contexts. This exploration ultimately underscores the broader relevance of fostering a culture that judiciously balances rights and
responsibilities for the overall well-being and stability of societies.
