Abstract

This research analyses the critical methodology employed by Abdullah al-Tarjumān (18th-19th century) in his engagement with the Bible and Christian theology. His work contributes significantly to the ongoing dialogue between Muslim and Christian scholarship, particularly through his pioneering application of text-critical methods. Al-Tarjumān departed from traditional approaches reliant on established interpretations and adopted a direct, critical examination of the biblical text itself. This methodology, characterised by intellectual and methodological independence, incorporated both internal and external factors, enabling him to analyze Christian doctrines and expose perceived contradictions within different biblical versions. Drawing upon a descriptive-analytical approach, this study sheds light on the distinctive features of al-Tarjumān's text-critical methodology in the context of biblical studies his engagement with Christian beliefs and his arguments against their theological basis. Furthermore, the historical and intellectual context surrounding his work and its reception within broader religious discourse.
