Abstract

This research presents a comparison between two divergent approaches in dealing with the narration of the hadith by meaning. The first claims that the hadiths, in their entirety, are transmitted by meaning, which implies dropping the Sunnah and not relying on it in legislation. The second asserts that hadiths are transmitted literally and the narration by meaning is very rare since it could not concern more than one letter or one or two words. In this study, I relied on the analytical method for analyzing texts and sayings, and the critical approach to discuss sayings and doctrines and discern the correct from the weak among them. In addition, the comparative approach is adopted to compare between the two approaches. The study was divided into three sections. The first concerns the definition of the narration by meaning and its scope. The second one is about the disapproval of the Sunnah based on claiming its narration by meaning; the statements and proofs are presented and discussed.

The third section treats the disclaiming of the hadiths’ transmission by meaning phenomenon. The most important results include: (1) that the prophetic hadith was conveyed both literally and by meaning, and the latter was dictated by the nature of human transmission and it is not a defect or deficiency in judging the narrators and their willingness to transmit the Sunnah, (2) the narration by meaning concerns verbal hadiths, (3) the narration by meaning is not the unique reason of the variability of hadiths expressions, there are other reasons that some people overlook either because of bad intentions, or because of a lack of study and knowledge.
